Prepare the area for turfing
Prior to ordering your turf, it is important to prepare the area, so that when the turf arrives it is a matter of just laying it.
- Remove any debris from the site including stones, building materials, tree roots, vegetation and weeds (kill weeds with glyphosate (Roundup) but allow 10 days prior to laying turf).
- Install sprinklers, underground plumping or drainage.
- Level site or add gradients, fill in depressions and slope ground away from buildings to assist with drainage.
- You may wish to apply Ammonium Nitrate, Sulphate of Ammonia, manure or a light top soil.
Lawn Installation
Do not water/wet the site 24 hours prior to installing the turf. The prepared area will become sticky and it will make it difficult to position your turf.
Plan where the pallets of turf should be situated once delivered ensuring they are in easy access to the site but not in the way

- Lay the turf the same as you would roll out a mat or carpet, just "green side up"
- Start along the longest straight line using the boundary, path or driveway, otherwise use builder's string to create a line. If you are laying turf on a slope, start from the bottom and lay horizontally as not to create channels for the water to flow down.
- Butt the edges of the turf together, without overlapping or gaps, and try not to stretch the turf.
- Stagger every second row of turf to create a brick pattern - this reduces erosion.
- Use a sharp knife, shears or spade to cut the rolls or shape around existing gardens and paths.
- Make sure your turf makes good soil contact by rolling the area after all the turf has been laid.
- Once installed, give the turf a good watering.
